Should Ferrets Drink From a Bowl or a Water Bottle?

Ferrets can drink from either a water bowl or a water bottle. A bowl is simple and easy to clean, while a bottle can help prevent spills. The best choice is the one that gives your ferret reliable access to fresh, clean water — and for some ferrets, using both works well.

Is a Water Bowl Better for Ferrets?

A water bowl is a perfectly good way to provide water for a ferret, as long as the bowl stays clean and your ferret can’t easily tip it over.

Bowls are simple to refill, easy to clean and let you see immediately how much water is available.

There is, however, one small problem.

Ferrets.

Some ferrets seem to regard a bowl of water as less of a drinking vessel and more of an enrichment activity. They may dig in it, push it around or flip it completely over.

If your ferret does this, try a heavy ceramic crock or a bowl that securely attaches to the cage.

Are Water Bottles Good for Ferrets?

Water bottles can also work well for ferrets and have one obvious advantage: they’re much harder to tip over.

They can be especially useful for a ferret that repeatedly spills or digs in a water bowl.

The downside is that a bottle has more parts to keep clean, and the drinking tube can become blocked or stop flowing properly.

If you use a bottle, check it every day to make sure water flows freely. Don’t assume that a full bottle automatically means your ferret can drink from it.

What Are the Pros and Cons of a Water Bowl?

Advantages of a Bowl

  • Simple for your ferret to use
  • Easy to refill
  • Easy to inspect and clean
  • Easy to see how much water is available

Disadvantages of a Bowl

  • Can be tipped over
  • Some ferrets dig or play in the water
  • Water can become dirty more easily
  • An unsecured bowl can be pushed around the cage

What Are the Pros and Cons of a Water Bottle?

Advantages of a Bottle

  • Difficult for your ferret to spill
  • Keeps the water contained
  • Doesn’t take up floor space in the cage

Disadvantages of a Bottle

  • The drinking tube can become blocked
  • Bottles and tubes can be more difficult to clean thoroughly
  • A leaking bottle can soak bedding or the cage floor
  • You need to check regularly that water is actually flowing

Can I Give My Ferret Both?

Absolutely.

Using both a securely mounted bowl and a water bottle gives your ferret another source of water if one gets spilled, blocked or emptied.

It’s not necessary for every ferret, but it can be a useful setup if you’re concerned about keeping water reliably available.

How Often Should I Change My Ferret’s Water?

Give your ferret fresh, clean water every day and clean the bowl or bottle regularly.

If you’re using a bottle, pay particular attention to the drinking tube when cleaning it and check that it hasn’t become clogged.

If you’re using a bowl, replace the water whenever your ferret has managed to fill it with food, bedding or other mysterious ferret contributions.

So Which Should I Choose?

If your ferret leaves a bowl alone, a heavy or securely attached water bowl is a simple choice. If your ferret constantly spills the bowl, a water bottle may make life considerably easier.

And if your ferret seems determined to find a way around whichever solution you choose, using both gives you a little extra insurance.

The important part isn’t whether the water comes from a bowl or a bottle. It’s making sure your ferret always has reliable access to fresh, clean water.
