Why Does My Ferret Keep Tipping Over Its Water Bowl?

If your ferret keeps tipping over its water bowl, the bowl is probably too light, too easy to move or simply too much fun to play with. Ferrets are curious, playful animals and some love digging in, pushing or rearranging their food and water dishes. A heavy ceramic bowl or a bowl that securely attaches to the cage will usually solve the problem.

Why Do Ferrets Tip Over Their Water Bowls?

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one: your ferret is being a ferret.

Ferrets explore their surroundings with enthusiasm. A lightweight water bowl can quickly become something to push, pull, dig in or climb around. Some ferrets also enjoy digging directly in their water.

The result is usually a wet cage, wet bedding and an empty water dish.

How Do I Stop My Ferret From Tipping Its Water Bowl?

The easiest fix is to make the water bowl difficult to move.

Use a Heavy Ceramic Bowl

A wide, heavy ceramic crock is much harder for a ferret to push or flip than a lightweight plastic or stainless steel dish.

Look for a bowl with a broad base and enough weight that your ferret cannot easily get underneath an edge and lift it.

Attach the Bowl to the Cage

If your ferret is particularly determined, a bowl that securely attaches to the cage is usually an even better solution.

Locking crocks and similar cage-mounted bowls attach directly to the cage bars, allowing you to remove the bowl for cleaning while preventing your ferret from dragging it around the cage.

This is the option we’d try first for a dedicated bowl-flipper.

Choose the Right Location

Placement can help too.

Keep the water bowl away from litter boxes and areas where your ferret likes to dig or play. If possible, give the bowl its own predictable location rather than placing it in the middle of an active play area.

Should I Use a Water Bottle Instead?

A water bottle eliminates the possibility of flipping a bowl, and water bottles can work for ferrets. However, a bowl is also a perfectly reasonable way to provide water if you can keep it clean and securely in place.

If you use a bottle, check it regularly to make sure water is flowing properly and the drinking tube isn’t blocked.

Whichever method you use, your ferret should always have access to fresh, clean water.

What If My Ferret Likes Digging in the Water?

If the bowl stays upright but your ferret repeatedly digs the water onto the floor, securing the bowl may only solve half the problem.

You can try placing a washable waterproof mat or shallow tray underneath the bowl to contain smaller spills. You may also want to give your ferret another appropriate place to satisfy the urge to dig.

A dig box can provide an outlet for natural digging behavior without turning the water bowl into a swimming pool.

The Simple Fix

For most ferrets, you don’t need an elaborate solution.

Start with a heavy ceramic bowl. If your ferret can still move or flip it, switch to a bowl that securely attaches to the cage.

Your ferret may continue trying to rearrange the furniture, but at least the water should stay where you put it.
